Three ancient bronze statues of Hindu deities, Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, dating back over 400 years, were discovered during an excavation in Baghanki village, Manesar. Three Centuries-Old Bronze Statues of Vishnu and Lakshmi Unearthed in Manesar Village
Manesar, Haryana, India: Monday, May 1, 2023
During excavation work for the construction of a private residence in the Baghanki village of Manesar, three centuries-old bronze statues of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi were discovered on Sunday by villagers. The unearthing of these ancient artifacts has sparked immense interest and curiosity among historians, archaeologists, and religious devotees alike.
According to local authorities, the first statue depicts Lord Vishnu, the supreme deity of Hinduism, with his iconic attributes, including the conch shell, discus, and lotus flower. The second statue showcases Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu, who is revered as the goddess of wealth, prosperity, and fortune. The third statue is a unique representation of both deities seated together, symbolizing their divine union and presence in the material world.
Upon the discovery of the statues, villagers initially contemplated erecting a temple at the site. However, due to disagreements among the community members and the landowner, Mr. Prabhu Dyal, the driver of the JCB machine involved in the excavation informed the Bilaspur police station about the findings. Subsequently, a team of police officers from the Manesar police station arrived at the scene and secured the statues.
"The statues are believed to be over 400 years old based on our initial assessment," stated Dr. Banani Bhattacharyya, Deputy Director of the Archaeology and Museums Department, Government of Haryana. "Their exact age and historical significance will be determined following a comprehensive study and scientific dating techniques. The statues will be displayed in our museum for public admiration and further research."
Dr. Bhattacharyya and her team of archaeologists visited the excavation site and examined the context in which the statues were found. They believe that the statues may have been brought to the village approximately 400 years ago. However, further archaeological investigations are necessary to determine the precise circumstances and purpose of their placement at the site.
Mr. Dyal, who owns the land where the statues were unearthed, expressed his surprise at the discovery. "I had no idea there were ancient statues buried on my property," he said. "I assumed I had the right to keep them since the land belonged to me."
Local police officials have initiated an investigation into the discovery of the statues and have questioned all laborers involved in the excavation, including Mr. Dyal. However, no additional artifacts or valuables have been recovered thus far.
The discovery of these bronze statues holds immense significance in understanding the cultural and religious heritage of the region. They provide valuable insights into the artistic prowess, craftsmanship, and spiritual beliefs of the community that existed centuries ago. The statues will undergo further examination and conservation efforts by experts to ensure their preservation and accessibility for future generations.
