Alistair Johnston has revealed his reaction to Arne Engels being struck by a coin this afternoon at Ibrox.

With the Canadian defender empathetic towards his teammate in such a serious incident from a Rangers supporter.

Alistair Johnston has revealed his reaction to Arne Engels being struck by a coin this afternoon at Ibrox.

A coin was thrown at Arne Engels during Rangers' 2-1 win over Motherwell this afternoon at Ibrox.

The incident occurred as Engels was taking a corner in front of the Copland Stand.

The coin hit Engels on the head, but he was able to continue playing.

After the match, Alistair Johnston spoke out about the incident, calling on fans to "be smart" and refrain from throwing objects at players.

"It's something that unfortunately happens. And again, in an ideal world, it's not happening," Johnston said.

"That's the unfortunate case where it hits someone. And look, if that hits them in the eye, it's probably a pretty serious matter. So I just caution everyone just to be smart.

"Again, it's humans out there. It's someone's son. So let's just refrain from chucking things at guys' heads, ideally."

This is not the first time that a coin has been thrown at a player at Ibrox.

In 2019, Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster was struck by a coin during a match against Rangers.

The incident led to Forster being stretchered off the field and taken to hospital.

Rangers were fined £20,000 by the Scottish Football Association for the incident.

With Rangers still unable to guarantee Celtic supporters' safety at the Glasgow Derby in Govan, it is a telling sign of how Celtic players, staff, and supporters are made to feel across the city.
