Ubisoft has unveiled its first original non-fungible token (NFT) game titled “Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles.” Available as a free-to-play PC game via the Ubisoft Connect platform, the title leverages blockchain technology on the Oasys network.

In a tweet on Monday, the French video game company announced the launch of Champions Tactics, a fantasy-themed digital tabletop strategy game. The announcement comes after Ubisoft began minting fantasy champions as NFTs on Oasys in March 2023.

In Champions Tactics, players assemble teams of fantasy-themed digital champions to engage in turn-based battles against other online players. The game offers free “ethereal champions,” non-NFT characters that can be used in both unranked and limited ranked matches. By completing in-game quests, players can unlock additional champions for free.

Some of the NFT champions minted by Ubisoft are available for purchase on secondary NFT marketplaces, such as Oasis Marketplace. These NFT champions, priced at around $10 worth of OAS tokens, offer unlimited use in ranked matches and provide extra rewards.

Players can also merge two NFT champions to create a new, unique champion with specific visual and combat attributes, according to the game’s description on the Ubisoft website. “Each merge will result in a new champion with a unique name, appearance, abilities, and merging history,” the description adds.

Ubisoft began venturing into the NFT space in 2021, having announced plans to integrate NFTs into its games at the time. Among other NFT initiatives, the company launched a 10,000-piece NFT collection on Arbitrum in 2023. The collection granted early access to Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E.

In 2023, a cyberattack linked to North Korea’s Lazarus Group was reported to have targeted cryptocurrency investors through a fake NFT game, according to a analysis by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky. The attack combined social engineering tactics with advanced hacking techniques.

The attack reportedly lured victims into downloading malware disguised as game software from a fake NFT game, among other tactics to scam cryptocurrency investors, according to the analysis from Kaspersky.

“The attack began with watering hole attacks targeting cryptocurrency news and blogs. Scammers laced these pages with malicious code that scanned visitors’ browsers for Google Chrome,” stated the report from Kaspersky.
