The humble avocado is a key ingredient in guacamole, a delicious dip that pairs well with nachos or salad. To celebrate National Guacamole Day on September 16, here's a fun fact:

The word "avocado" is believed to have originated from the Nahuatl word for testicle, due to the fruit's shape and the fact that it grows in pairs.

The Aztecs called the fruit "aoacatl," which was transliterated into “āhuacatl.” This essentially means "testicle" in Nahuatl.

In a TikTok video, user @leksesapp, with 302,000 followers, shared this interesting fact. He explained that the Nahuatl language, spoken by about 1.5 million people in modern-day Mexico and Central America, was spoken in Mesoamerica, where the Aztecs discovered the avocado around 500BC.

He said, "The Aztecs discovered the avocado around 500BC and named it based off of, well you could probably guess, its shape and texture, and the fact that it grows in pairs."

"So of course, it was only natural to name the food based off what it looks like. It gets better too, the word molli in the Nahuatl language literally translates to sauce, so people speculated guacamole also translated to testicle sauce."

However, language specialists have debunked this claim due to the Spanish derivation of the word.

The video has garnered 1,600 likes and hundreds of comments. Some viewers expressed surprise and amusement, while others shared their own insights about the Nahuatl language andavocado lore.
