The Cabinet Office has advertised a civil service post to oversee the UK's dealings with the European Union (EU).

The role, which is worth at least £150,000 a year, will act as a “sherpa” for all of the UK’s interactions with the bloc.

It will involve advising the Prime Minister and the minister for European Union relations on matters relating to the EU and delivering the ‘EU reset’.

The successful applicant will also be expected to represent the Prime Minister at negotiations, including those relating to the Trade and Co-operation Agreement.

The agreement, which forms the basis for the UK-EU relationship following Brexit, will be up for renewal in 2025.

The civil service role is being recruited to through an open and competitive process and will receive a salary of between £153,000 and £200,000.

A Cabinet Office spokesperson said: “As we reset our relationship with the EU, building closer trade and security links and encouraging more investment from around the world, this new role will oversee that work.
