The Trump administration is reportedly considering entrusting regulation of the crypto sector to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), a move that would shift oversight away from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

This development comes amid a long-running debate over the classification of cryptocurrencies as either "securities" or "commodities." The SEC has largely maintained that most cryptocurrencies fall under the definition of a security, while the CFTC has categorized them as commodities.

The differing classifications have led to regulatory clashes between the two agencies, with the SEC pursuing enforcement actions against several CeFi (centralized finance) platforms, including Coinbase and Kraken, for allegedly offering unregistered securities.

According to rumors reported by Fox Business, the Trump administration's decision would effectively place spot crypto markets, including major centralized exchanges (cex), under the jurisdiction of the CFTC. This move would limit the SEC's regulatory authority over the crypto sector.

With this shift, most cryptocurrencies (not just Bitcoin and Ethereum) would likely be categorized as "commodities," leaving the SEC out of the picture due to the regulatory gray area.

Earlier reports suggested that outgoing SEC Chairman Gary Gensler had only granted the "commodity" designation to Bitcoin, while the CFTC had consistently defined other cryptocurrencies in this manner.
