The protocol’s standout feature is programmable escrow. In conventional payment systems, when buyers and sellers have to resolve disputes or request a refund, they rely on banks or third-party processors. Using non-custodial arbiters eliminates any potential bias or corruption that could arise with centralized mediators, and it also facilitates a sort of trustless resolution that is, in my opinion, a critical part of any system that is really trying to embody the ideals of a “banking with the unbanked” platform.

Besides having the features of escrow and dispute mediation, the protocol allows early and sender-approved withdrawals. This is especially useful in the not-so-rare instances when a buyer wants to retrieve his or her funds before a dispute has been resolved. And it is one more way the Protocol helps to ensure that transactions are fair and mutually agreed upon.
