몬테네그로, 권도권씨 항소 기각…범죄인 인도 결정 위한 길 마련

테라폼 랩스(Terraform Labs) 창업자 권도권씨가 몬테네그로 헌법재판소에 송환 결정을 재심사하기 위해 제기한 항소에서 패소했다.

Montenegro’s justice minister will decide whether crypto mogul Do Kwon, who is wanted in both the U.S. and South Korea, will be extradited to either country, following a failed appeal by Kwon.

몬테네그로 법무장관은 미국과 한국 모두에서 수배 중인 암호화폐 거물 권도권의 항소가 기각된 후 어느 국가로든 인도될지 여부를 결정할 예정이다.

According to Korea JoongAng Daily, Do Kwon, the founder of Terraform Labs, has lost his appeal in Montenegro’s Constitutional Court, which he filed to have the court reconsider its decision on his extradition. The ruling now paves the way for Montenegro’s justice minister to decide whether Kwon will be sent to the United States or South Korea for trial.

중앙일보에 따르면 테라폼랩스 창업자인 도권씨는 몬테네그로 헌법재판소에서 자신의 인도 결정을 재고해 달라는 항소심에서 패소했다. 이번 판결로 이제 몬테네그로 법무장관은 권씨를 재판을 위해 미국으로 보낼지 한국으로 보낼지 결정할 수 있게 됐다.

Kwon is facing charges in both countries. In the U.S., he is wanted for his role in the spectacular crash of his algorithmic stablecoin TerraUSD (USTC) and token Luna (LUNA) in May 2022. He is also facing legal issues in South Korea.

권씨는 양국에서 모두 기소됐다. 미국에서는 2022년 5월 자신의 알고리즘 스테이블코인 TerraUSD(USTC)와 토큰 Luna(LUNA)가 폭락한 사건에서 그가 맡은 역할로 인해 수배되고 있습니다. 그는 또한 한국에서도 법적 문제에 직면해 있습니다.

Kwon was arrested in Montenegro in March 2023 while attempting to board a private flight to the United Arab Emirates using forged documents. He was taken into custody after both the U.S. and South Korea requested his extradition.

A prominent figure in the crypto world, Kwon founded the Terra blockchain network, which promised to revolutionize the world of stablecoins with its advanced technology. However, everything came crashing down in May 2022, just months after the crypto market peaked in late 2021. The collapse of Kwon’s stablecoin project resulted in a staggering $60 billion loss for both retail and institutional investors.

As the crypto industry faced a wave of bankruptcies, Kwon became a subject of interest for authorities. Companies like Three Arrows Capital and FTX filed for bankruptcy due to a major liquidity crisis, and Kwon managed to slip away to Europe. After an Interpol red notice and global attention, Kwon was eventually located in Montenegro’s capital, Podgorica.

암호화폐 업계가 파산의 물결에 직면하자 권씨는 당국의 관심 대상이 됐다. Three Arrows Capital과 FTX 같은 회사들은 심각한 유동성 위기로 파산 신청을 했고, 권씨는 가까스로 유럽으로 빠져나갔다. 인터폴의 적색 수배와 세계적인 관심 이후 권씨는 결국 몬테네그로의 수도 포드고리차에 위치하게 됐다.

Kwon’s company, Terraform Labs, agreed to a record $4.47 billion settlement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission after a jury found it guilty of defrauding crypto investors.
