SEOUL, Dec. 11 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and the United States are conducting joint research to strengthen protection against cryptocurrency heist attempts amid growing concerns of such attacks by North Korea-linked hackers, officials said Sunday.

한국과 미국은 북한 관련 해커들의 암호화폐 공격 시도에 대한 보호 강화를 위해 공동 연구를 진행하고 있다고 관계자들이 일요일 밝혔다.

Based on a recently signed technical annex between the South Korean government and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the two sides will jointly develop technologies to prevent cryptocurrency-targeted attacks and to track stolen assets, according to authorities and cybersecurity industry officials.

당국과 사이버보안 업계 관계자에 따르면 최근 한국 정부와 미국 국토안보부 간에 체결된 기술 부속서에 따라 양측은 암호화폐를 겨냥한 공격을 방지하고 도난당한 자산을 추적하는 기술을 공동으로 개발할 예정이다.

The science ministry plans to support such research through the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation until 2026.

과학부는 이러한 연구를 2026년까지 정보통신기술기획평가원을 통해 지원할 계획이다.

The move comes as the price of bitcoin recently surged to $100,000 after the U.S. presidential election last month, driving up concerns of increased attempts by hackers to steal virtual assets.

이번 조치는 지난달 미국 대선 이후 최근 비트코인 ​​가격이 10만 달러까지 급등하면서 해커들의 가상자산 탈취 시도가 증가할 것이라는 우려가 커지면서 나온 것이다.

While the United States collaborates with other countries for cybersecurity research, it is known to have chosen South Korea for research on digital asset tracking technology as North Korea is seen as a key culprit behind cryptocurrency heists.

미국은 사이버보안 연구를 위해 다른 나라들과 협력하고 있지만, 북한이 암호화폐 강탈의 주범으로 지목되면서 디지털 자산 추적 기술 연구를 위해 한국을 선택한 것으로 알려졌다.

Under the program, South Korean and U.S. researchers, including those from Korea University and the RAND research institute, will focus on technologies to prevent and track hackers when they steal assets from a cryptocurrency exchange.

이 프로그램에 따라 고려대학교, RAND 연구소 등 한미 연구진은 암호화폐 거래소에서 자산을 훔치는 해커를 방지하고 추적하는 기술에 중점을 둘 예정이다.

They will also focus on understanding how they convert or launder other financial assets they obtain into virtual assets through illegal ransomeware or other methods.

또한, 불법 랜섬웨어나 기타 방법을 통해 획득한 기타 금융자산을 가상자산으로 전환하거나 세탁하는 방법에 대해서도 중점적으로 알아볼 예정입니다.

North Korea is known as a major player in cryptocurrency heists, with hackers linked to the country estimated to have stolen $1.34 billion worth of cryptocurrency across 47 incidents this year, according to Chainalysis, a blockchain analysis firm.

블록체인 분석업체 체이널리시스(Chainalytic)에 따르면 북한은 암호화폐 강탈의 주요 주체로 알려져 있다. 북한과 연계된 해커들이 올해 47건의 사건을 통해 13억4000만 달러 상당의 암호화폐를 훔친 것으로 추산된다.
