Senator Bernie Moreno is urging the United States to begin buying Bitcoin and build up a big stockpile of the crypto asset in a bid to strengthen the country’s monetary position.

Speaking at the Digital Chamber Blockchain Summit on March 26, Moreno said he wants lawmakers to pass a bill by August to set up a national Bitcoin reserve and begin buying 1 million BTC over five years.

According to legal experts at Bloomberg, there’s a 30% chance that the U.S. will begin buying Bitcoin this year.

Meanwhile, VanEck crypto analyst Mathew Sigel places the odds of the bill passing at a 50/50 shot.

“I think it’s a long shot. There’s certainly support in both parties for a U.S. Bitcoin standard, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a bill will pass,” said Sigel.
