title: Senator Bernie Moreno Wants the United States to Start Buying Bitcoin

Senator Bernie Moreno wants the United States to start buying Bitcoin. He thinks the country needs a big pile of it, like a reserve.

title: Senator Bernie Moreno Wants the United States to Start Buying Bitcoin

Senator Bernie Moreno is urging the United States to begin buying Bitcoin and build up a big stockpile of the crypto asset in a bid to strengthen the country’s monetary position.

Speaking at the Digital Chamber Blockchain Summit on March 26, Moreno said he wants lawmakers to pass a bill by August to set up a national Bitcoin reserve and begin buying 1 million BTC over five years.

The senator’s idea to have the US government buy and hold Bitcoin and other digital assets has been discussed before.

However, considering the legislation would need to pass both the House and Senate and then be signed by President Trump, chances of the bill passing by August are slim.

According to legal experts at Bloomberg, there’s a 30% chance that the U.S. will begin buying Bitcoin this year.

Meanwhile, VanEck crypto analyst Mathew Sigel places the odds of the bill passing at a 50/50 shot.

“I think it’s a long shot. There’s certainly support in both parties for a U.S. Bitcoin standard, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a bill will pass,” said Sigel.

Earlier this month, U.S. Rep. Nick Begich and Sen. Cynthia Lummis introduced the Bitcoin Act of 2025, which must be approved by Congress to become law. The legislation would create a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and a U.S. Digital Asset Stockpile, based on President Trump’s new executive order.

Senator Moreno believes Bitcoin is key to the U.S. maintaining its position as a global monetary leader.

“If the U.S. starts buying Bitcoin, it could have a huge impact on the crypto market and other countries' views on digital currencies,” said one analyst.

With cryptocurrency adoption rapidly increasing around the world, the decision of whether or not the U.S. should begin buying Bitcoin has wide-ranging implications.
