UVA Health Gifts Thousands of Dollars to Nonprofits in Honor of the Holidays

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - UVA Health is gifting five nonprofits thousands of dollars each in honor of the holidays, and as a token of appreciation to its employees.

“This is a small way we can reach out, make a difference in these communities, and really say thank you in a meaningful way,” said Joshua Barney, spokesperson with UVA Health.

The $37,500 total in donations will be given in honor of UVA Health’s 18,000 employees, Barney said.

“We’re doing this because we really wanted to say thank you to all our incredible employees,” Barney said.

Those funds will be distributed between five different nonprofits, including two right in the hospital’s backyard.

“These are groups that are doing great work in their communities and their efforts very much align with our efforts here at uva health,” Barney said.

Salvation Army and Loaves & Fishes Food Panty in Charlottesville will each receive $7,500.

Barney said these are much needed funds.

“We selected these groups in recognition of folks who could really use the money for a good cause and really make a big difference. We wanted to recognize groups that are making a difference and who are helping improve health in their communities ‘cus that’s our goal here at UVA Health,” Barney said.

Salvation Army and Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry each serve thousands of people in the area.

Barney said many of those include UVA Health patients and that helping these nonprofits also helps their patients.

“We want to be there to not just treat people when they’re sick but help people stay healthy,” Barney said.

Barney said now, during the holiday season is the most important time to help out.

“It’s just a good chance especially this time of year to pull back and say ‘hey, we see that, we appreciate that, thank you’,” Barney.
