Preparations are underway in southern Texas for a dangerous winter storm and final preparations are being made before we see several inches of snowfall through Tuesday.
A quarter or any type of coin placed on top of a frozen cup of water in your freezer can tell you whether or not your food is safe to eat after a power outage, according to a viral social media post.
When you return home, if you find the coin has moved towards the bottom of the cup it's a sign you lost power and the contents in your freezer may be contaminated.
This is because when power goes out, the temperature in your freezer will begin to rise. As the water in the cup begins to melt, the coin will sink.
If you find the coin has not moved, it's a sign that your freezer stayed cold enough to keep your food safe.
This "trick" can tell you whether or not your food is safe to eat or if it's not safe to eat and should be disposed of.
I know many people with camps or second homes who do this, and you should consider doing it, too, as we prepare for this historic snowstorm.
Much of the snowfall will begin Monday night and continue for most of Tuesday. Roads will likely not be suitable for driving, so if you are away from your home or camp, this coin trick in the freezer will be vital upon your return.
Stay safe and continue to check back here for more updates in the days ahead.
