Thai Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Crypto Mining, Seizing Millions in Devices

Apr 29, 2024 at 04:41 pm

Thai authorities have conducted raids on illegal crypto mining operations, seizing hundreds of devices and making arrests. The crackdown targeted two locations, resulting in the seizure of equipment worth millions of dollars and the discovery of illegal electricity supply systems used to steal unpaid-for electricity.

Thai Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Crypto Mining, Seizing Millions in Devices

Thai Authorities Uncover Multimillion-Dollar Illegal Crypto Mining Operations, Seize Hundreds of Devices

Amidst a surge in cryptocurrency mining activities, Thai authorities have launched a major crackdown on illegal mining operations, resulting in the seizure of hundreds of illegally imported devices and the arrest of multiple suspects.

Acting on tips, Cyber Crime Investigations Bureau officers and officials from the Provincial Electricity Authority conducted raids on two undisclosed locations in a coordinated operation, uncovering sophisticated crypto mining setups.

Temple Raid Yields Substantial Cache of Mining Equipment

The first raid targeted a temple in Samut Sakhon's Ban Phaeo district, where investigators confiscated 187 crypto mining devices. The seizure also included computers, tablets, and 465 mobile phones, suggesting a significant mining operation.

Warehouse Compound Yields Additional Devices, Electricity Theft Uncovered

The second raid unfolded at a warehouse compound in Ratchaburi, where authorities discovered and seized an additional 650 crypto mining devices, bringing the total haul to an estimated $5 million (200 million baht).

Further investigation revealed that the devices were illegally imported from China and sold locally, with the suspects offering hosting services for miners at a monthly fee. The elaborate setup also involved illegal electricity supply systems, enabling the miners to steal an estimated $135,000 (5 million baht) in unpaid electricity.

Arrests Made, Suspects Admit to Illegal Activities

Following the raids, three suspects were arrested and detained for questioning. They confessed to overseeing the mining operations and importing the seized devices from China. The suspects further disclosed that they hosted the machines on behalf of miners for a monthly fee, which covered electricity costs.

The crackdown highlights Thailand's intensified efforts to regulate the cryptocurrency industry, particularly in response to concerns over illegal mining activities and electricity theft. The authorities are committed to cracking down on such operations, safeguarding the country's energy supply and maintaining a fair and transparent business environment.

Implications for Crypto Mining in Thailand

The recent raids indicate a shift in Thailand's approach towards crypto mining, suggesting a stricter enforcement of regulations. Individuals and businesses involved in mining activities are advised to comply with the law and obtain necessary permits to avoid legal repercussions.

The government's stance on crypto mining may also have broader implications for the industry in Thailand. It remains to be seen whether this crackdown will deter further investment in crypto mining or lead to a more comprehensive regulatory framework that balances the interests of the industry and the nation.
