Tea with the Treasurer: The Story of Sacagawea & Her Coin
Oct 02, 2024 at 04:03 am
Experience the story of Shoshone woman warrior Sacagawea and the making of her U.S. dollar coin when Marion Women's Club presents “Tea with the Treasurer: The Story of Sacagawea & Her Coin.”
The story of Shoshone woman warrior Sacagawea and the making of her U.S. dollar coin will be presented by Marion Women’s Club at “Tea with the Treasurer: The Story of Sacagawea & Her Coin.”
The program will begin at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the historic Marion Women's Club Home, 118 S. State St. It is free and open to the public.
Former U.S. Treasurer Mary Ellen Withrow, also a longtime Women's Club member, will share how she helped to introduce and mint the Sacagawea coin in 2000 while serving as treasurer under former President Bill Clinton.
“Her story needs to be told,” Withrow said in a news release from the club. “Sacagawea was a real warrior, a survivor. She was so clever in how she helped guide the Lewis and Clark Expedition while caring for her baby along the way. She truly saved the entire Expedition.”
Sacagawea was a Shoshone Native American woman who, in her teens, helped the Lewis and Clark Expedition, traveling with them thousands of miles − from North Dakota to the Pacific Ocean.
The Sacagawea coin features a profile of Sacagawea and her child, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau. It features a copper core clad by manganese brass, giving it a distinctive golden color.
Those attending the program will have an opportunity to win an authentic Sacagawea coin.
Withrow will be accompanied by Marionite Jan Augenstein, retired City Schools history teacher, who has researched Sacagawea, making presentations throughout Ohio.
“Lewis and Clark kept journals all along the way,” Augenstein pointed out. “Sacagawea found food along the route, and befriended tribes − including her own brother − which kept the explorers safe. In fact, many people credit her with saving Lewis and Clark's lives.”
Guests will learn more about the famous journey as well as how the Sacagawea coin came about. In addition, complimentary tea and treats will be provided by Women's Club member Gillian Anantharaman, owner of Booming Blessings Tea & Treasure, Marion.
According to Valerie Wigton, Marion Women's Club president, the event follows the longtime tradition of early club women hosting teas throughout the year and discussing important topics.
“This program honors our rich tradition, while telling the story of a woman − a warrior and a survivor − who helped shape our nation's history,” she explained. “And what an honor it is to feature both Mary Ellen and Jan who have such close ties to the Sacagawea story.”
