The Super Bowl flip coin is minted in East Central Florida, and has been for more than 30 years

I'm going to flip a coin.
Think in your head whether it will be heads or tails.
You've got a 50-50 chance.
Got your guess?
No cheating.
Here goes. (The coin is up).
And the winner is…
Tails!
Did you know over the past 58 Super Bowls, for the coin flip that decides the game's opening possession, "tails" has a slight edge over "heads" at 30-28?
In a twist, last year a coin was flipped twice thanks to the second overtime game in Super Bowl history.
If you're wondering, different coins are used before the game and before overtime. More on that in a bit.
Did you know: the Super Bowl coin is minted in East Central Florida, and has been for more than 30 years?
The Highland Mint in Melbourne has provided the Super Bowl flip coin since prior to Super Bowl 28 on Jan. 30, 1994, when Dallas faced Buffalo. If you’re wondering, the flip was “tails.”
This year, the Kansas City Chiefs return to the Super Bowl for the fifth time in six years.
It's a rematch of Super Bowl 57, won by the Chiefs.
How the Super Bowl flip coin gets made
As soon as the AFC and NFC championships are over, the Highland Mint springs into action.
"Right after the last game Sunday we start the presses, the coins start getting minted and we start shipping out merchandise," said Vince Bohbot, longtime executive vice president of the Highland Mint. "The coin for the actual coin toss (prior to the Super Bowl), it actually takes three days to get made after the fact."
"We'll ship coins zero to 100 to the NFL. We'll ship them to NFL on-field operations and then they take care of distributing them."
The other 9,900 are sold to the general public.
"That's a limited edition of 10,000 coins, and the coin is minted just like a real currency," Bohbot said. "It's silver plated and it has 24 karat gold highlights."
Coin No. 00001 is flipped prior to the start of the game.
What will it be? Heads? Tails?
Highland Mint coins have come up “tails” 18 times and “heads” 13 times.
In last year’s Super Bowl, Kansas City won the coin toss and called “heads.”
"Heads" it was, and the Chiefs deferred their choice to the second half.
The prior year, the Chiefs called the opening coin toss and won by calling “tails” when they played the Eagles the first time.
They also deferred that year, too.
If you want to go back three Super Bowls to Bengals vs. Rams, the coin came up “heads.”
Are different coins flipped prior to the game and prior to overtime?
Yes.
As previously mentioned, coin No. 00001 is always the one used prior to the game.
However, they don't use that coin for overtime.
Bohbot explains: "Coin Zero is used for the overtime. ... Basically, it's the artist proof."
What have the overtime coin flip results been?
One year ago, the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs went to overtime in Super Bowl 58 tied, 19-19. It was the second overtime Super Bowl game.
Since the Chiefs called the coin flip prior to the game, San Francisco got it before overtime began. The 49ers called "tails," and it came up "tails."
In Super Bowl 51, the first OT title game, the Patriots had the overtime choice, and they chose "heads."
"Heads" it was.
So, for overtime games, it's tied 1-1.
Who designs the Super Bowl flip coin?
Given this is a rematch of the Super Bowl from two years ago, you might wonder if they just use the same coin front and change the back for the new Super Bowl logo.
The answer is no.
"The design is controlled by the NFL," Bohbot said. "So, their designers come up with the concepts and basically we just mint it."
Of course, this year's Chiefs-Eagles Super Bowl will be held at the Superdome in New Orleans; two years ago the same two teams played at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
Demand for the Highland Mint coins
So, do coins sell out faster depending on which teams play in the Super Bowl? It depends.
"You know the Chiefs fans, they have a huge collection going right now," Bohbot said. "We also find that there's a lot of non
