Saga's Mainnet Launch Breaks Records, Revolutionizes Web3 Gaming with SAGA Token and Horizontal Scaling
Apr 09, 2024 at 02:18 am
Saga, a gaming-focused layer-1 blockchain protocol, is set to launch its mainnet and SAGA token on April 9, following a record-breaking Binance airdrop campaign that generated $13.4 billion in staked funds. As a "layer-1 to launch layer-1s," Saga enables developers to launch their own chains (chainlets) or sets of chains within the Saga network, fostering horizontal scaling and theoretically infinite scalability. Over 350 projects, primarily gaming-related, are currently building in the Saga ecosystem.

Saga Aims to Revolutionize Web3 Gaming with Horizontal Scaling and Fee Structure
Saga Protocol, the layer-1 blockchain tailored for gaming, is poised to make a significant mark in the industry with the launch of its mainnet and the SAGA token on April 9th. The highly anticipated launch comes amidst a record-breaking staking campaign on Binance, which garnered over $13.4 billion.
What is Saga?
Saga is not a conventional layer-1 blockchain, but rather a platform designed to facilitate the launch of other layer-1 networks, known as "chainlets." These chainlets can operate in parallel, powering decentralized applications (dapps) or supporting apps on other chainlets within the Saga network. This concept of "horizontal scaling" enables projects to expand their capabilities infinitely, according to Saga CEO Rebecca Liao.
Currently, over 350 projects, referred to as "innovators" within the Saga ecosystem, are actively building on the platform. While Saga is not exclusively focused on gaming, a substantial majority of projects under development involve gaming in some capacity, with approximately 80% of projects on the testnet being game-related.
SAGA Token Launch and Distribution
The SAGA token will be made available alongside the mainnet launch on April 9th and will be listed on Binance on day one. The Binance Launchpool campaign, which enabled users to stake Binance Coin (BNB) and FDUSD stablecoin to earn SAGA tokens prior to the launch, shattered previous records by surpassing the $13 billion mark.
Purpose and Utility of SAGA Token
The SAGA token serves a crucial purpose within the Saga ecosystem, addressing the often-frustrating issue of transaction fees in the cryptocurrency world. According to the Saga litepaper, the current fee model resembles paying for an Uber ride while simultaneously paying Amazon for hosting the Uber app. Saga aims to solve this dilemma by placing the fee burden on developers, who must pay using SAGA tokens.
Developers are required to deposit SAGA tokens in exchange for computing power. As the deposit diminishes, developers have the flexibility to explore various funding options for additional computing power. They can opt for user-paid fees, subscription models, advertising-based models, or freemium models.
The initial circulating supply of SAGA will be 90 million tokens (9% of the total supply), with half allocated to the over 500,000 Launchpool participants.
Play-to-Airdrop Campaign and Saga Origins
In December, Saga initiated a "play-to-airdrop" campaign that incentivized gamers to engage with projects on the Saga testnet. The campaign featured various games, including Rogue Nation, Generative Dungeon, and Vennity. Top performers on the leaderboards of these games were rewarded with SAGA tokens.
Saga Origins, the game publishing division of Saga, was announced in March as the airdrop campaign concluded. Saga Origins aims to provide comprehensive support to game developers, covering user acquisition, community building, and marketing efforts. This initiative underscores Saga's commitment to fostering a thriving Web3 gaming ecosystem.
Conclusion
The launch of Saga's mainnet and the SAGA token on April 9th marks a significant milestone for the blockchain gaming industry. With its record-breaking fundraising, unique horizontal scaling model, and the introduction of Saga Origins, Saga is positioned to revolutionize Web3 gaming by offering developers unprecedented opportunities for innovation and growth. The future of Saga holds immense promise, and it remains to be seen whether the platform will succeed in its ambitious goal of bringing Web3 gaming to the mainstream.
