Designed by esteemed artist Edwina Ellis, the coin features the National Gallery's majestic columns, a symbol of its renowned collection of art. Encircling the edge of the coin is the inscription "Maiorvm Gloria Posteris Lvmen Est," a Latin phrase that translates to "the glory of our ancestors is a light to our descendants." This inscription, prominently displayed on the gallery's ceiling, encapsulates the belief that the great masters of the past inspire future generations to create enduring works of art.

The £2 coin was previously included in the Royal Mint's 2024 annual sets but is now available for individual purchase. This commemorative issue serves as a tangible reminder of the National Gallery's enduring cultural significance and its continued role in shaping the artistic landscape.
