Royal Mint Unveils Commemorative Coin Honoring National Gallery's Bicentenary

In recognition of the esteemed National Gallery's 200th anniversary, the Royal Mint has unveiled a commemorative £2 coin. Designed by the renowned Edwina Ellis, the coin serves as a testament to the gallery's enduring legacy and the profound impact of artistic brilliance throughout history.

Depicting the iconic facade of the National Gallery in London's Trafalgar Square, the coin showcases the grandeur of its Corinthian columns. Encircling the intricate numismatic representation is the Latin inscription "Maiorvm Gloria Posteris Lvmen Est," which translates to "the glory of our ancestors is a light to our descendants." This phrase, emblazoned on the ceiling of the Gallery's Wilkins Building, underscores the profound connection between the great artists of the past and their enduring influence on contemporary creativity.

"We are honored to partner with the National Gallery in celebrating their bicentennial," said Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at the Royal Mint. "This coin is a fitting tribute to the gallery's unparalleled collection of world-class paintings and unwavering commitment to preserving artistic brilliance. We hope that numismatists and art enthusiasts alike will cherish this miniature masterpiece for generations to come."

In addition to its historical significance, the commemorative coin also holds special significance as it will be included in a time capsule organized by the National Gallery as part of its NG200 celebrations.

Collectors can acquire the £2 commemorative coin in a range of formats, including gold, silver, and brilliant uncirculated, available for purchase through the Royal Mint's website. Prices commence at £13, offering an accessible opportunity to possess a piece of this artistic and historical legacy.

The coin's release follows its inclusion in the Royal Mint's 2024 annual sets and is now available for individual purchase, further broadening its reach among coin enthusiasts and art collectors worldwide.
