Prestigious £2 Coin Commemorates National Gallery's Bicentenary

In recognition of the National Gallery's bicentenary, a commemorative £2 coin designed by Edwina Ellis has been unveiled. The coin pays homage to the gallery's iconic building in London's Trafalgar Square.

Adorning the coin's design are the Gallery's renowned Corinthian columns, meticulously rendered in numismatic detail. Encircling the columns is the inscription "Maiorvm Gloria Posteris Lvmen Est," a Latin phrase that translates to "the glory of our ancestors is a light to our descendants." This inscription, inscribed on the ceiling of the Gallery's Wilkins Building, embodies the belief that the works of past masters inspire future generations of artists.

Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at the Royal Mint, expressed delight in collaborating with the National Gallery on its bicentennial celebration. "This coin serves as a fitting tribute to the Gallery's legacy of exceptional paintings and its unwavering commitment to preserving artistic excellence," Morgan stated. "We anticipate collectors will cherish this miniature artwork for many years to come."

The £2 coin will be incorporated into a time capsule organized by the National Gallery as part of its NG200 festivities later this spring.

The commemorative coin is available in various editions, including gold, silver, and brilliant uncirculated, through the Royal Mint's website. Prices commence at £13. Having been previously released as part of the Royal Mint's 2024 annual sets, the coin is now accessible for individual purchase.

The National Gallery's bicentennial celebration commemorates the institution's remarkable journey since its establishment in 1824. The Gallery has amassed an unparalleled collection of masterpieces, attracting millions of visitors annually. Its mission to inspire and educate through art continues to resonate with art enthusiasts and scholars worldwide.

The £2 commemorative coin not only celebrates the National Gallery's past but also serves as a timeless testament to its enduring role in the world of art. The coin's design captures the architectural grandeur of the Gallery's Trafalgar Square home, while its inscription evokes the enduring legacy of artistic brilliance that continues to illuminate future generations.
