President Donald Trump is set to host El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele in Washington later this month, Bloomberg has reported.

The April meeting follows the two leaders’ tightening of bonds on topics like immigration and security. Bukele’s office confirmed the visit, with the White House so far refusing to comment.

U.S. President Donald Trump is set to host El Salvador President Nayib Bukele in Washington later this month, as their close ties over topics like immigration and security continue to forge new avenues of cooperation between the two nations, Bloomberg reported.

The meeting in April follows reports earlier this year of a deal struck between the two countries for the return of hundreds of suspected Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador. The members would be imprisoned in Bukele’s nation upon arrival.

Bukele’s office confirmed the visit, while the White House has yet to comment.

This marks another key diplomatic engagement for Trump, who met with the leaders of France, India, the UK, and Israel within the first two months of his presidency.

Earlier this year, Bukele’s administration agreed to accept criminals deported by the U.S., setting the stage for heightened cooperation, particularly in the domains of crime and immigration. Although the terms of the agreement remain largely undisclosed, Bukele has previously shown willingness to engage with U.S. officials on deportation matters.

In February, Bukele submitted a proposal to accept deportee criminals from any nation in exchange for an undisclosed payment, as stated in a letter to members of the U.S. Congress.

On X, Bukele responded to a report on the meeting by posting several cans of Diet Coke—a beverage President Trump is known to favor.

For Trump, receiving Bukele is part of a broader plan to quickly meet with world leaders early in his presidency. By April, Trump will have already sat down with several high-profile leaders, aiming to build relationships with allies and address pressing global issues.

The visit may also open the door for a discussion on U.S.-El Salvador relations beyond deportations. Areas like trade, regional security, and migration policies are likely to be part of any talks between the two heads of state.

Although plans for the visit have been mapped out by Bukele’s office, the White House has not yet issued a formal response. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday afternoon, according to Bloomberg.

However, reports of the meeting have circulated and plans are reportedly being made on both sides. The lack of official confirmation from the U.S. government adds a note of uncertainty, but Bukele’s team appears to be working with the scheduled timetables.

El Salvador was the first nation to introduce Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021, making it a global experiment in crypto adoption. While supporters see it as a move toward financial innovation and sovereignty, critics highlight the volatility and the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) opposition.

Bukele has used Bitcoin to attract foreign investment, showcasing his pro-crypto policies. It remains to be seen if Bitcoin will be on the agenda during his meeting with Trump, but their discussions may indicate a shift in U.S.-El Salvador economic ties.
