Pectra Upgrade Runs into Trouble on Ethereum Testnet
Feb 26, 2025 at 10:30 pm
Ethereum's much-awaited Pectra upgrade was not complete after being live on the Holesky testnet, leaving developers concerned.
Pectra, Ethereum’s highly anticipated upgrade, encountered an issue on the Holesky testnet, halting the finalization of the hard fork.
The integration of 11 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) into the PoS chain was supposed to be completed by 21:55 UTC on Monday. However, despite the successful triggering of the hard fork at the designated time, the finalization stage did not materialize as anticipated.
In the realm of blockchain, finality signifies the definitive settlement of transactions, rendering them irreversible. Testnets, such as Holesky, serve as testing grounds for developers to detect and rectify problems before they impact the mainnet.
It is still unclear what caused the issue with Pectra’s finalization, and developers are actively discussing the topic on the Eth R&D Discord channel.
This isn’t the first testnet upgrade to hit a snag. Earlier this year, there was a problem with the testing of the Dencun upgrade on the Goerli testnet in January.
Pectra is a collection of 11 EIPs that are being tested on two testnets before being deployed to the mainnet. Pectra is meant to bring several key updates to the blockchain.
One of the main EIPs in Pectra is EIP-7702, which aims to improve the user experience of crypto wallets by making it easier for users to interact with Ethereum.
Another major addition is EIP-7251, which will increase the validator’s staking cap from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH.
Currently, validators who want to stake more than 32 ETH have to distribute their holdings over multiple nodes, but this will no longer be necessary after Pectra is deployed.
The increase in the top stake limit could also help to simplify validator operations and improve the performance of the network.
Holesky is one of two testnets that will be testing the Pectra simulation. The second test is planned for March 5 on the Sepolia testnet, although it could be postponed depending on the severity of the issue encountered on Holesky.
As Pectra is a crucial step in the development of Ethereum, especially with the upcoming Shanghai/Dcun hard fork, which will introduce the long-awaited ETH withdrawal function for liquid staked ETH, any setback could have an impact.
Moreover, Pectra is a significant upgrade that will bring several new features and improvements to the Ethereum network.
Some of the key EIPs included in Pectra are:
* EIP-7702: This proposal aims to improve the user experience of crypto wallets by making it easier for users to interact with Ethereum. It will also add new capabilities to wallets, such as the ability to perform bulk transactions.
* EIP-7251: This proposal will increase the validator’s staking cap from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH. Currently, validators who want to stake more than 32 ETH have to distribute their holdings over multiple nodes. However, after Pectra is deployed, they will be able to stake up to 2,048 ETH in a single node.
* EIP-6884: This proposal will introduce a new opcode for efficient eWASM (WebAssembly for Ethereum) integration. eWASM is a new programming language that will be used to develop smart contracts for Ethereum in a more standardized and maintainable way.
* EIP-7442: This proposal will change the way gas is charged for SSTORE operations. SSTORE operations are used to store data in smart contracts. Pectra will completely disable payloads on testnets.
The Pectra upgrade is a key milestone in the development of Ethereum. It will bring several new features and improvements to the network, which will help to prepare it for the next stage of growth.
