Nubank Decides to Discontinue Its Cryptocurrency, Nucoin

Sep 12, 2024 at 03:01 am

This announcement comes just over a year after the launch of the Nucoin ecosystem, which debuted in late 2022.

Nubank Decides to Discontinue Its Cryptocurrency, Nucoin

Nubank has announced that it will be closing down its cryptocurrency, Nucoin, due to difficulties in operating the token within the evolving regulatory landscape for cryptocurrencies in Brazil.

Nucoin was launched in late 2022 as part of an ecosystem that aimed to reward Nubank customers for using the digital bank's services.

Customers could earn Nucoins by using their Nubank credit card or app, and the tokens could be used to redeem discounts, special offers, or traded like other digital currencies.

However, despite initial enthusiasm, Nucoin struggled to achieve sustainable growth. The digital currency also faced challenges due to the uncertain regulatory environment surrounding cryptocurrencies in the region.

In Brazil, the rules around cryptocurrencies have seen significant changes in recent years. In December 2022, the Brazilian Congress passed a law to regulate the crypto market, effectively legalizing digital money.

This law requires companies dealing with cryptocurrencies, known as virtual asset service providers (VASPs), to obtain licenses similar to those held by traditional banks.

The Brazil Central Bank and Securities and Exchange Commission are responsible for ensuring compliance with these regulations and are currently drafting detailed guidelines for the use and trading of cryptocurrencies within the country.

These regulations aim to protect users and prevent fraud, while also establishing penalties for crimes involving digital assets. Brazil is still finalizing these rules, and the complete system is expected to be in place by the end of 2024.

Nubank has stated that its users' Nucoin holdings will be converted to cash at the current market value. Users will then have the option to withdraw their funds or use them for purchases within the Nubank app.

The official discontinuation of Nucoin is scheduled for December 9, 2024. After this date, the Nucoin blockchain will be shut down, and the token will no longer hold any value or utility.
