Nigerian national football team captain, William Troost-Ekong, has pledged to donate all future camp allowances and match bonuses to support the aspiring young footballers of Akwa Ibom State.

The announcement was made by Brila FM on Friday, amidst the preparations for Troost-Ekong's upcoming charity match and the launch of his foundation. The inaugural event, scheduled for June 2, 2024, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, will serve as a platform to raise funds and create opportunities for the underprivileged youth in Akwa Ibom.

Born in the Netherlands to a Dutch mother and a Nigerian father, Troost-Ekong is a native of Akwa Ibom. He currently plays for Greek club PAOK Thessaloniki. As the team's captain at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Ivory Coast, Troost-Ekong made history by emerging as the tournament's top scorer with three goals and earning the prestigious MVP award.

The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, extended a warm reception to Troost-Ekong following his outstanding performance at the AFCON. In a show of appreciation for the state's unwavering support, the footballer presented the governor with an official Eagles jersey at the Government House in Uyo.

Troost-Ekong's international debut for Nigeria came on June 13, 2015, in an AFCON qualifying match against Chad, where he played the full 90 minutes. He has since accumulated 71 caps and scored seven goals for his country.

The footballer's generous donation reflects his commitment to giving back to the community and inspiring the next generation of footballers in Akwa Ibom. His foundation aims to create a thriving football environment where young talents can develop their skills and pursue their dreams of playing professionally.

Troost-Ekong's compassionate gesture has been widely lauded by football enthusiasts and sports stakeholders alike. It is a testament to his unwavering dedication to the sport and his belief in the transformative power of football. His initiative is expected to make a significant impact on the lives of aspiring young footballers, providing them with the resources and support they need to excel both on and off the field.
