The National Football League (NFL) and renowned rap mogul Jay-Z unveiled the first glimpse of their highly anticipated partnership on Friday, announcing a free "Inspire Change" concert scheduled to be held prior to the league's opening game on Thursday. The concert, featuring performances by Meek Mill, Meghan Trainor, and Rapsody, aims to showcase the collaborative efforts between the NFL, players, and Jay-Z to address social justice issues.

In addition to the concert, the league and Jay-Z's Roc Nation disclosed revenue streams for their new social justice initiative, "Inspire Change." Various artists are expected to create original music for a "Songs of the Season" campaign, which will be featured during games and simultaneously released on streaming platforms. True to the NFL's commercial nature, an apparel line is also reportedly in the works.

However, the partnership has drawn criticism from some quarters, with former San Francisco 49ers safety Eric Reid expressing skepticism and disapproval. Reid, who has been a staunch advocate for social justice causes, questioned the sincerity of the NFL's initiative, claiming it sought to "diffuse the uprising of Black voices demanding justice" with token gestures.

"Let's diffuse the uprising of Black voices demanding justice with concerts to 'inspire change' that have nothing at all to do with real 'action'. It's cool because our token black guy set up the concert," Reid tweeted on Friday.

Reid's criticism echoes concerns raised by other figures, including former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who initiated the movement of kneeling during the national anthem as a protest against police brutality and racial injustice. Kaepernick severed ties with the NFL after he was effectively blackballed for his activism.

The NFL's partnership with Jay-Z has drawn scrutiny due to his previous support for Kaepernick and his public critique of the league's handling of the quarterback's protest. The rapper reportedly attempted to persuade Travis Scott to withdraw from performing at the Super Bowl in solidarity with Kaepernick.

Revenues from the "Songs of the Season" and apparel line are earmarked to fund the initiative, which has already awarded nearly $2 million in social justice grants to organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and Operation HOPE.
