Lunar Influence on Stonehenge Builders Unveiled by Archaeologists
Apr 19, 2024 at 11:49 pm
A team of archaeoastronomers is investigating the potential influence of the moon on the builders of Stonehenge. They hypothesize that a major lunar standstill, when the moon reaches its furthest north or south point in its orbit, may have influenced the monument's alignment. The researchers plan to observe moonrises and sunsets to document the alignment between the moon and the Station Stones, exploring the possible connection between lunar cycles and the architecture of Stonehenge.
Lunar Influence on Stonehenge Builders Unraveled by Archaeoastronomers
A groundbreaking investigation by a team of archaeoastronomers is delving into the captivating possibility that the celestial dance of the moon played a pivotal role in shaping Stonehenge's enigmatic architecture.
According to a captivating press release issued by the Royal Astronomical Society, scholars from the prestigious universities of Oxford, Leicester, and Bournemouth propose a compelling theory that a rare astronomical phenomenon known as a major lunar standstill may have been instrumental in aligning the monument.
A lunar standstill, or lunistice as it is scientifically termed, occurs when the Moon reaches its extreme northern or southern point in its monthly orbit. Notably, a major lunar standstill involves a distinctive cycle that spans 18.6 years, during which the Moon's declination at standstill varies between 18.134° and 28.725° due to a phenomenon known as lunar precession.
"Stonehenge's architectural affinity with the Sun has been extensively documented," explains Professor Clive Ruggles, Emeritus Professor of Archaeoastronomy at Leicester University. "However, its connection to the Moon has remained somewhat obscure."
Professor Ruggles further elaborates, "The four Station Stones, positioned in cardinal directions, align precisely with the Moon's extreme positions. For decades, researchers have engaged in a spirited debate over the deliberate nature of this alignment. If intentional, how did the builders achieve it, and what might have been their underlying motive?"
To unravel this celestial enigma, the research team has meticulously planned a series of observations to meticulously document Moonrises and Moonsets coinciding with key moments in the year when the celestial orb is aligned with the enigmatic Station Stones. Furthermore, they will meticulously capture the visual effects of these astronomical events on the stones, immortalizing the interplay of light patterns and shadows.
Intriguingly, evidence suggests that at least one major lunar standstill was deliberately marked during the early stages of Stonehenge's construction. Cremated remains discovered within the surrounding ditch and bank, as well as in the enigmatic Aubrey Holes—a series of 56 pits—provide tantalizing clues. Notably, a significant concentration of cremations has been identified in the south-eastern sector, corresponding with the Moon's most southerly rising position.
"The Station Stones may have served as an ingenious tool for measuring the circumference of the sarsen circle, approximately 500 years after the site's initial use for cremations," speculates English Heritage. "This compelling alignment suggests an enduring connection between lunar cycles and the architectural design of Stonehenge."
As the researchers embark on their meticulous observations, the tantalizing possibility of a lunar influence on Stonehenge's enigmatic builders draws ever closer to unraveling. The forthcoming results promise to illuminate the celestial secrets that have long shrouded this iconic monument, revealing the profound connection between ancient astronomy and the enduring legacy of Stonehenge.
