Amidst a predicted heatwave, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) proposes a token system for voters to mitigate long queues at polling booths. The tokens will streamline wait times, providing waiting areas with shades, parking, and drinking water facilities. This initiative, similar to one implemented in Jharkhand by the Election Commission of India (ECI), aims to enhance voting comfort, particularly for vulnerable populations, and will be presented to the ECI on Friday.
Lucknow Municipal Corporation Proposes Token System for Voters Amidst Heatwave Forecast
Lucknow, India – In anticipation of sweltering temperatures during the peak summer months, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has unveiled a comprehensive plan to mitigate the discomfort of voters during the upcoming Lucknow polls, scheduled for May 20th.
Spearheaded by Municipal Commissioner Inderjit Singh, the proposal for a token system will be presented before the Election Commission on Friday. This system, similar to one successfully implemented by the Election Commission of India (ECI) during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in Jharkhand, aims to alleviate the inconvenience of standing in long queues under the scorching sun.
"With the scorching heat expected on the voting day, we want to make the voting process comfortable for people," stated Inderjit Singh. "We will provide tokens and seating arrangements, so people do not have to stand in queues in the sun. Also, we will improve facilities like seating, sunshades, wheelchairs, and nearby parking."
The LMC has identified several challenges faced by voters at polling booths, including inadequate drinking water, toilet facilities, seating, shade, and wheelchair accessibility. Additionally, long wait times due to high voter turnout, difficulties in locating names on voter lists, and a lack of comfortable waiting areas have been known to deter voters.
To address these issues, the LMC will not only provide tokens but also establish designated seating areas with shade and ensure the availability of drinking water at parking lots. Volunteers will be present to assist voters and streamline the process.
The LMC's commitment extends beyond the polling booths. In collaboration with Residents Welfare Associations, government departments, malls, and parks, the corporation will utilize every available platform to spread awareness about the election. Signages in public places, LMC vehicles providing drinking water and garbage collection services, and even IPL matches will be leveraged to remind citizens of the importance of voting.
"As asked by the EC, we will use social media, establish clubs for voter education, and organize meetings with various social groups," added Singh. "Our goal is to make voting accessible for young people, women, and individuals with disabilities. We will closely collaborate with all stakeholders and conduct multiple campaigns leading up to the election."
This proactive initiative by the LMC demonstrates a commitment to citizen well-being and the integrity of the electoral process. By addressing the challenges faced by voters, the corporation aims to ensure that the upcoming polls are conducted smoothly and without any hassles for the people of Lucknow.
