Formby Beach named one of the UK's best family-friendly beaches
Oct 21, 2024 at 06:06 pm
The research, carried out by JoJo Maman Bebe, considered the average rating and number of reviews on Google Maps to calculate a beach score
October half term is just around the corner, presenting the perfect opportunity for a family day out. While autumn often brings to mind woodland walks, a trip to the beach can be just as enjoyable.
The absence of summer crowds and the refreshing coastal breezes make for an invigorating experience. Plus, children always enjoy playing on the sand, regardless of the season.
If you're considering a beach visit this half term, a recent study has identified the best family-friendly beaches in the UK. Notably, Formby Beach, just an hour from Manchester, ranked fifth, outperforming beaches in Cornwall, Wales and Bournemouth.
The research, carried out by JoJo Maman Bebe, considered the average rating and number of reviews on Google Maps to calculate a beach score, along with proximity to cities and towns. Formby received a score of 89.1 with an average rating of 4.7.
Whitby Beach topped the list with a remarkable score of 98, followed by Edinburgh's Portobello Beach with a score of 94.4. Scarborough came third with a score of 91.6, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Here are the top ten family-friendly beaches in the UK:
1. Whitby Beach, Yorkshire
2. Portobello Beach, Edinburgh
3. Scarborough Beach, Yorkshire
4. Bournemouth Beach, Dorset
5. Formby Beach, Merseyside
6. Tenby South Beach, Pembrokeshire
7. Porthminster Beach, Cornwall
8. Mumbles Beach, Swansea
9. Durdle Door Beach, Dorset
10. Watergate Bay, Cornwall
Formby Beach, a stunning seaside location, is no stranger to accolades. It has previously been featured in The Sunday Times' list of the UK's best beaches.
With its golden sand dunes, breathtaking views and a backdrop of a majestic pine forest, it's easy to understand its appeal. Unlike resorts like Blackpool, Formby offers a unique experience with its natural beauty and absence of arcades.
It's an ideal spot for a distinctive autumn walk, but visitors are advised to bring their own refreshments as there are no facilities nearby. Access to Formby Beach is free, and parking is available at a National Trust-operated car park.
Payment can be made via cash-only pay and display machines or through the paybyphone app, with parking costing £8.50 for the day.
