'Go with The Flo': A board game that simplifies complex topics related to menstruation

A board game that aims to simplify complex topics related to menstruation has been launched in the city. Titled ‘Go with The Flo’, the game was created by Sradha Culture Lab, a research and design initiative by Ranjini Haridas.

The game, which is priced at Rs 799, has over 60 menstruation-related terms. It aims to provide a fun and engaging way for people to learn about the subject. The game is designed for two to four players aged 12 and above and can be played in 30-45 minutes.

Speaking to TNIE, Ranjini said, “The game was born out of my son’s curiosity about menstruation. I realised that there was a need for a tool that could help young people understand the topic in a simple and non-judgemental way.”

She added that the game was extensively researched and involved inputs from medical professionals, teachers and students. “We also conducted several playtests to refine the game mechanics and ensure that it was fun and engaging,” she said.

The game begins with players choosing a character card that represents a different menstrual experience. They then roll a dice and move their tokens around the board, collecting cards that contain questions or statements related to menstruation. Players have to answer the questions correctly or discuss the statements among themselves.

If a player lands on a ‘Flo’ square, they get to choose a special card that can help them advance or hinder other players. The first player to complete a full round of the board and reach the ‘Flo-ish’ square wins the game.

“The most rewarding part was watching my son and his peers play the game. Seeing them sit as a group and discuss periods was a proud moment,” Ranjini said.

The game’s visual design is the work of B Priyaranjanlal, a graphic artist and designer. “Balancing aesthetics with functionality was challenging. The logo symbolises moon phases, with the ‘O’ in ‘Flo’ representing the full moon and the 28-day cycle,” said Priyaranjanlal.

‘Go with The Flo’ is the first research creation from Sradha Culture Lab. Ranjini adds that the game neither glorifies menstruation as divine nor labels it as an illness but presents it as objectively as possible.

Although the initial plan was to launch the game in Malayalam, Ranjini opted for English due to limitations in vocabulary. However, she has plans to conduct workshops to brainstorm ways to introduce a Malayalam version in the future.

“Menstruation remains a subject of silence and discomfort even today. This silence often leaves young menstruators without the language or platform to express their concerns. ‘Go with The Flo’ tries to address these issues by debunking myths and providing a supportive space for learning,” Ranjini said.
