Owner Jackie Thurlow noticed Poppy exhibiting concerning symptoms, including vomiting, loss of appetite, and difficulty eliminating. Alarmed, Thurlow promptly contacted Arundell Vets, where Poppy underwent a thorough examination by veterinarian Susana Recio. Recio palpated Poppy's abdomen and detected a hard object, leading her to suspect an obstruction.

To confirm the diagnosis, Poppy was sedated and X-rayed. The images revealed the culprit: a small, round metal object lodged in her stomach. The offending item was surgically removed, preventing devastating consequences such as a ruptured intestine or life-threatening peritonitis.

"When we saw the foreign body on the X-ray, we knew it was something metal and round," said Recio. "But it was a real surprise to discover it was a 5p coin."

Recio emphasized the critical nature of seeking immediate veterinary care in such situations. "Without surgery, her bowel would have ruptured and caused septic peritonitis, which can be fatal. If anyone is at all concerned that their pet has swallowed a foreign body, my advice is to go to your vet as soon as possible."
