Davos 2020: The biggest names in business and finance are gathering in the Swiss Alps. Here's what to watch

Here are the biggest events to watch this week:

Davos

After a year off due to the pandemic, the World Economic Forum is back in Davos, Switzerland. The annual gathering of global elites will feature a heavy focus on the Biden administration, the war in Ukraine, and the battered state of the world economy.

Among the attendees will be Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, and Swiss President Alain Berset.

Economic data

Monday will feature the latest reading on the Chicago Fed National Activity Index, a broad measure of economic activity. Economists expect the index to show a slight slowdown in December.

On Tuesday, the Commerce Department will release data on new home sales for December. Economists expect a decline in sales following a strong reading in November.

Later in the week, the Labor Department will release its latest reading on initial jobless claims. Economists expect claims to rise slightly from the prior week.

Earnings

Several major companies will be reporting their latest quarterly earnings this week.

On Monday, we'll hear from Colgate-Palmolive (CL), Marathon Petroleum (MPC), and Tyson Foods (TSN).

Tuesday will feature earnings from AT&T (T), 3M (MMM), and Union Pacific (UNP).

Later in the week, we'll get earnings from Chevron (CVX), Exxon Mobil (XOM), and McDonald's (MCD).
