A new brainteaser has left even the smartest Brits scratching their heads, but it turns out there’s actually a super simple solution.
Cameron Gibson, who goes by @camerongibsonirl on social media, shared a rather tricky coin-themed brainteaser to his social media account. While people agreed that the puzzle was rather challenging, his method for finding a solution was totally ‘genius’.
In the video, Cameron explained: “Here’s a simple challenge you can set your family and friends. All it uses is nine coins and the idea here is that you have to try and separate each of the nine coins from the other coins by drawing only two more squares.”
In the video, Cameron has a sheet of paper with a single square on it and nine coins set up in a three by three grid inside it. He explained that the challenge is to ensure that each coin is separated from the rest of the coins, with the catch being that you’re only able to draw two more squares.
While it may seem like an almost impossible puzzle to solve, it turns out the solution is really rather simple. Cameron asked anyone who wanted to work the puzzle out on its own to pause his video there, before sharing how to solve the brainteaser.
He said: “Well, here’s the solution. All you have to do is really quickly separate each of the coins using one square like this.” Cameron then drew a diagonal square inside the outer square, with the new addition incorporating the five central coins, but leaving each corner coin outside the new square.
Next, he explained: “And then, using your second square, you need to just isolate that middle coin, really simply separating all the coins from each other using only two more squares.” The puzzle enthusiast then drew another square around the central coin, which meant that each coin was completely separated from all the others.
People were quick to comment on the video, with one person pleased by how clear the instructions were, writing: “Your instructions were very clear.” While a second agreed and said: “Well explained.”
