The official statement from Essex Police reads: "Two people have been arrested after two children died following a collision in Pitsea.
"We received a call at 6.25pm on Saturday 1 February reporting a girl and a boy had been involved in a collision with a car in Walthams Place. The car failed to stop at the scene.
"Emergency services attended but, despite their best efforts, both children were pronounced dead. A man and a woman have since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision."
