Armed Attacks Escalate in Bunia, Youth and Leaders Raise Alarm

Apr 28, 2024 at 07:37 pm

Bunia has witnessed a surge in armed attacks in recent weeks, with several incidents reported in the past two weeks. Local youth and political figures have linked these attacks to drug dens scattered throughout the city, where armed criminals allegedly plan their operations. The targeted neighborhoods include Bankoko, Opasi, Salongo, Sukisa, Saio, Bakongolo, Hoho, Kindia, and Ngezi. These dens, reportedly run by civilians and uniformed men, have raised concerns among residents and authorities.

Amidst a Surge in Armed Attacks, Bunia's Youth and Political Leaders Sound the Alarm

Bunia, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) - In a chilling revelation that has sent shivers down the spines of residents, the city of Bunia has witnessed a surge in armed attacks in recent weeks. With over a dozen incidents reported within just two weeks, the city is gripped by a sense of unease.

According to youth organizations and political figures who spoke out on Friday, April 26th, in the aftermath of an assault on a Radio Télévision Nationale Congolaise (RTNC) journalist in Bunia, these attacks are meticulously planned in houses across the city that are hubs for the illicit trade in cannabis.

The targeted neighborhoods with the highest concentration of cannabis distribution points include Bankoko, Opasi, Salongo, Sukisa, Saio, Bakongolo, Hoho, Kindia, and Ngezi. Disturbingly, the young activists and politicians point fingers at both civilians and uniformed personnel as the proprietors of these drug dens.

"These drug dens have become sanctuaries for armed criminals to plot their nefarious activities," exclaimed Luc Malembe, a local political figure, demanding the immediate dismantling of these illicit establishments.

When contacted, Colonel Abeli Mwangu, the city's police chief, appealed to the public for vigilance and urged them to report any suspicious individuals or activities to the police. His comments follow a recent police operation in the Kindia district, where a network of machete-wielding bandits terrorizing the community was apprehended.

The surge in armed attacks, coupled with the nexus between drug trafficking and criminal activity, has cast a dark shadow over Bunia. The situation demands an immediate and concerted response from law enforcement and the community alike. The youth and political leaders' clarion call serves as a wake-up call to address this growing threat that jeopardizes the safety and well-being of the city's inhabitants.

As the authorities intensify their efforts to combat armed violence, it is imperative that citizens play an active role in providing information and supporting the police. The restoration of order and tranquility in Bunia depends on the collective resolve of its residents and the unwavering commitment of those entrusted with the responsibility to protect them.
