According to youth organizations and political figures who spoke out on Friday, April 26th, in the aftermath of an assault on a Radio Télévision Nationale Congolaise (RTNC) journalist in Bunia, these attacks are meticulously planned in houses across the city that are hubs for the illicit trade in cannabis.
The targeted neighborhoods with the highest concentration of cannabis distribution points include Bankoko, Opasi, Salongo, Sukisa, Saio, Bakongolo, Hoho, Kindia, and Ngezi. "These drug dens have become sanctuaries for armed criminals to plot their nefarious activities," exclaimed Luc Malembe, a local political figure, demanding the immediate dismantling of these illicit establishments.
When contacted, Colonel Abeli Mwangu, the city's police chief, appealed to the public for vigilance and urged them to report any suspicious individuals or activities to the police.
