Crypto ransomware gang Qilin has reportedly hacked Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stealing data including private correspondence and personal information.

The assertion comes from cybersecurity analyst Dominic Alvieri, who says the department was hacked earlier today, 10 August.

In a statement shared by Alvieri, Qilin claims it’s in possession of data stolen from the ministry, and that some of it has been sold. According to the gang, the stolen data includes “private correspondence, personal information, decrees etc.”

The report from Alvieri comes after the US announced it was freezing intelligence sharing with Kyiv, following a breakdown in relations between the Trump administration and Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Qilin is a russian-speaking crypto ransomware gang that runs a ransomware-as-a-service operation, according to a 2024 report from the Health Sector Cybersecurity Coordination Center. The group's preferred cryptocurrencies for extortion are bitcoin and monero.

The gang launched in July 2022 under the name "Agenda" before rebranding to Qilin a few months later. It's also believed to be behind a hack on London hospitals that caused major disruption.
