Rickard Nordin, a sitting MP, submitted a letter to Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson on April 8, appealing for the government to diversify its foreign exchange reserves beyond traditional currencies and gold.

A Conservative Approach to Foreign Exchange

In his letter, Nordin argued that Bitcoin offers more than just speculative value, often discussed in the Swedish media.

He highlighted its global use as a hedge against inflation and a practical payment method, especially in regions like Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia, where authoritarian rule hinders traditional financial systems.

According to Nordin, Bitcoin’s scarcity, code-governed nature, and global community involvement make it a valuable asset class, not just a speculative investment.

“This property of Bitcoin as a lifeline for freedom is something that the Swedish people, with their strong tradition of fighting for freedom and human rights, can surely relate to,” he added.
