Rickard Nordin, a sitting MP, submitted a letter to Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson on April 8, appealing for the government to diversify its foreign exchange reserves beyond traditional currencies and gold.

A Conservative Approach to Foreign Exchange

In his letter, Nordin argued that Bitcoin offers more than just speculative value, often discussed in the Swedish media.

He highlighted its global use as a hedge against inflation and a practical payment method, especially in regions like Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia, where authoritarian rule hinders traditional financial systems.

“Sweden has a tradition of a conservatively managed reserve, dominated by fiat currencies like the dollar, euro, and yen, and to a smaller extent, gold,” he stated.

According to Nordin, Bitcoin’s scarcity, code-governed nature, and global community involvement make it a valuable asset class, not just a speculative investment.

Its use by dissidents and freedom fighters in oppressive regimes, enabling them to raise funds and conduct transactions despite capital controls, is another crucial aspect.

“This property of Bitcoin as a lifeline for freedom is something that the Swedish people, with their strong tradition of fighting for freedom and human rights, can surely relate to,” he added.
