Hal Finney's $10 Million Bitcoin Prediction Resurfaces After 16 Years

Bitcoin historian Pete Rizzo has reignited interest in an iconic prediction made by Hal Finney 16 years ago.

In a recent tweet, Rizzo shared a remarkable email from Finney, sent on Jan. 10, 2009, as he contemplated how to value Bitcoin, which was then priced at $0.

Finney, a computer scientist, famously received the first Bitcoin transaction and tweeted about Bitcoin on Jan. 11, 2009. He is also a leading contender to be Satoshi despite denying it until his death in 2014. Satoshi Nakamoto's true identity remains a mystery to this day.

Finney's email delves into a thought experiment to determine Bitcoin's potential value if it becomes the world's dominant payment system.

"Then the total value of the currency should be equal to the total value of all the wealth in the world. Current estimates of total worldwide household wealth that I have found range from $100 trillion to $300 trillion."

"With 20 million coins, that gives each coin a value of about $10 million."

Finney's prediction continues to inspire long-term faith in Bitcoin, despite its current price of $93,726, which is far from his $10 million target.
