The world was glued yesterday on the much-anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky. What should have been an event that would have signaled an immediate end to the Russian-Ukraine conflict and allowed the US to secure a minerals deal devolved into a heated exchange between the parties.

Tempers flared as Zelenski directed a question to Vice President James David “JD” Vance, reminding the US official of the failed response of the US in the Crimean conflict. The event notably resulted in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine.

Along the way, the VP criticized how the war is “forcing conscripts to the front lines” and how Zelensky is “attacking” the US administration in its efforts to prevent the “destruction” of Ukraine in the prolonged conflict.

On Monday, Trump met with Zelensky at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. The meeting was brief and both leaders exchanged pleasantries.
