Stablecoin issuer Tether has announced that it will be setting up its headquarters in El Salvador after being granted a Digital Asset Service Provider (DASP) license by the country’s authorities.

The world’s largest stablecoin issuer by market capitalization will be joining the ranks of several other major crypto firms that have already set up shop in the Central American nation, which became the first in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender in September 2021.

Among the crypto firms that have already established a presence in El Salvador are Binance, FTX, and Blockstream. Several other crypto companies, including Tether, are also reportedly in the process of setting up operations in the country.

The DASP license will reportedly allow Tether to operate in El Salvador with greater legal security, enabling it to integrate its operations with the country’s regulatory framework and continue fostering innovation.

According to the stablecoin issuer, being able to operate under El Salvador’s regulatory framework will allow it to continue developing advanced value propositions and help determine the direction of the industry’s evolution.

“El Salvador is emerging as a digital finance hub, thanks to its Bitcoin-first economy, pro-Tether regulation, and innovative population. It’s the ideal location for Tether to thrive, and we’re excited to contribute to El Salvador’s progressive policies,” Tether stated in a press release shared with CryptoSlate.

Tether also noted that El Salvador’s focus on emerging markets aligns with its own mission to promote the use of Bitcoin and develop fintech-related services in new economies.

“Together, we can reach people and corporations who want to access decentralized finance,” Tether added, further stating that El Salvadorans will be able to use Bitcoin and services built on the network to interact with the stablecoin issuer without needing conventional banking systems.
