When an ordinary-looking penny was found among the belongings of Don Lutes in 2019, it made news. According to Heritage Auctions, the 1943 bronze Lincoln cent sold for $204,000 after attracting nearly 30 bids. The coin belonged to Lutes until his death in 2018. Due to declining health, he consigned it to Heritage. The Dallas, Texas-based auction company said the proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Berkshire Athenaeum in his hometown of Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

A penny's value is determined by its rarity and quality. While most pennies are only worth a few dollars, some highly sought-after pennies may be in your pocket or stashed in the cushions on your couch.

Notably, a 1943 steel cent sold at auction for an impressive $218,500, marking the highest price ever paid for one of these coins. Steel pennies are Lincoln Wheat cents that were minted in 1943. In an effort to conserve copper and aid in the World War II effort, the U.S. Mint struck Lincoln Wheat cents with steel instead of copper in 1943. The mint resumed using the standard copper composition for coins in 1944.

1995 Doubled Die Penny

The doubling is most evident in the word "LIBERTY," particularly in the letter "B," though it isn't as pronounced as it is on the 1972 Doubled Die coins. There is also some light doubling in the date. “These are one of the easiest valuable pennies to find,” coin expert James Bucki told CNBC. “I’ve found one myself.”

When first discovered, raw examples of the coins were selling for up to $300 each. However, as more examples were found over time, the prices for each coin dropped to as low as $20 or less.

1969-S Doubled Die Penny

Doubled dies occur when an extra image is imparted on a die, also known as a stamp, from the hub striking it twice. Bucki told CNBC that errors in the minting process are what causes the doubling.

According to him, a 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse has the most doubling in the words "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the coin's obverse. A coin's正面, which usually features a portrait, is referred to as the "heads" side by collectors. Also, note the letter "S" directly below the year 1969, indicating that this coin was minted at the San Francisco Mint.
