DUNDEE UNITED ace Glen Middleton had a coin thrown at him during his team's clash against St Mirren today.

DUNDEE UNITED ace Glen Middleton had a coin thrown at him during his team's clash against St Mirren today.

Dundee United star Glen Middleton had a coin thrown at him during his team's clash against St Mirren today.

The winger was subbed off in the 61st minute of the game at St Mirren Park to be replaced by the man who would score the match-winning goal, Louis Moult.

Jim Goodwin's side picked up a vital three points to go clear of Aberdeen in third thanks to a stunning overhead kick from Moult.

Some fans jumped over the advertising boards in celebrating the late winner.

Moments earlier, Toyosi Olusanya had missed a spot kick up the other end.

But things turned ugly on the hour mark with Middleton seen picking up a coin that was chucked in his direction as he tried to walk off the pitch.

With the scores locked at 0-0, it appears someone from the crowd lobbed the object at the player which on closer inspection looks like a 10p coin.

The former Rangers and St Johnstone star didn't appear to be hurt by the coin and he kept it within his grasp to hand to the officials once he was off the pitch completely.

SunSport has contacted St Mirren and Dundee United for comment on the incident.

Buddies boss Stephen Robinson was asked about his team's penalty woe after the match.

He said: “Our penalty taker went off. Roland Idowu was on them so Toyosi was brave to step up.

“I will give him credit for that but ultimately, we have maybe cost ourselves up to 12 points from missed penalties.

“People miss chances and there isn’t much you can do about that.

We’re creating chances, playing some half-decent football.

“It’s a battle of both boxes and we didn’t come out on top of that.

“We don’t have a 20-goal striker. We have to keep working with players and trying to improve them.

“There were a lot of positives to take from the game.

“We played in large parts but we have lost goals like that previously and we did it again.

“Credit to Dundee United, they win games like that and don’t concede like that.

“But if we had defended better, we would have come out with a point and that would have stopped the losing run.

“Dundee United don't concede goals like that as their personnel step up and take responsibility.

“We have to reset now. We have lost four games in a row before but we have to react and cut out the mistakes.

“Zach Hemming was outstanding in goal, which we needed him to be.

“I am very confident he will be good for us but we didn’t defend well enough at the goal.

“If you don’t do that, you get punished.

“The least we should have come out of that game with was a point.”
