Cryptocurrency platforms have lost a total of $2.2 billion to threat actors in over 300 heists so far in 2024, a 21% increase from the $1.8 billion stolen in 282 crypto theft incidents throughout 2023, according to The Record, a news site owned by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future.
While crypto platforms lost $1.5 billion in the first seven months of 2024, the frequency and scale of cryptocurrency heists decreased significantly following separate intrusions against DMM Bitcoin and WazirX, which resulted in losses of $305 million and nearly $235 million, respectively, according to a Chainalysis report. Furthermore, North Korean threat actors — who continued to lead cryptocurrency theft after stealing $1.35 billion in 47 intrusions, up from $660.5 million taken in 20 incidents last year — were seen carrying out far fewer attacks on crypto platforms following a summit in June between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
