Pointing to surging undergraduate applications, an exceptional volume and quality of research and creative work, and generous supporters who have given $163 million in new pledges since July, Chancellor Justin Schwartz described a university that remains fundamentally strong despite the challenges facing higher education and the world.

Before a crowd of about 500 in the University Memorial Center and about 700 viewers online, Schwartz highlighted the strengths of the university and encouraged the campus community to be leaders in driving change.

Schwartz acknowledged the challenges facing higher education and the world and urged faculty, staff and students to meet the moment.

“We will not allow external forces to define us,” he said. “We will embrace our leadership role and take this moment to redefine ourselves.”

Schwartz outlined four key priorities that will help the campus to sustain and enhance its mission amid rapid change:

Schwartz reiterated the importance of supporting international students and scholars and increasing the university’s global impact.
