To set the scene, the native cryptocurrency that fuels the XRP Ledger was created in 2012 by David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb, and Arthur Britto. At the time of its conception, XRP was a really big deal in the cryptocurrency world. “Ripple Coins” as they were known back then was one of the first to not follow the crypto mining consensus, and instead became a currency “as is”, with pre-mined currency slowly entering the network.
