Sunny Woo Park is a renowned figure in the martial arts world, recognized for his exceptional dedication and leadership. As the co-founder of Master Park's Black Belt America and the President of Kombat Taekwondo USA, Sunny has played a pivotal role in shaping Taekwondo's global evolution. Through his ten thriving studios in the tri-state area and mentorship of over 3,000 students, he embodies the essence of purposeful leadership in martial arts.
From driving $3 million annually at Master Park's Black Belt America to laying the groundwork for Kombat Taekwondo's worldwide expansion with RESPECT TOKEN, Sunny continues to leave an indelible mark on the industry. His story combines entrepreneurial vision, martial arts excellence, and a deep commitment to empowering individuals through the discipline of Taekwondo.
Rising Through Adversity
Sunny's inspiring journey began with the values instilled by his hardworking immigrant parents from South Korea, who opened their first martial arts studio in 1989. At just 10 years old, Sunny was already managing the Oradell, New Jersey, studio, taking charge of classes, training sessions, and student interaction.
However, his path to success wasn't without struggles. Financial hardships in 1998 forced the family to close their studio and lose their home. While his father returned to South Korea, Sunny's mother worked tirelessly to keep the family afloat. These challenges taught Sunny an important life lesson, as he reflects, “Tough times don’t last forever—you just have to stay dedicated and keep moving forward.”
By 2004, Sunny, alongside his wife and brother, rebuilt the family business under the name Kombat Taekwondo USA. This exciting new chapter emphasized innovation and strong leadership, paving the way for the incredible achievements that followed, both locally and internationally.
Kombat Taekwondo USA: Building Bridges Through Martial Arts
Sunny's vision for Kombat Taekwondo USA extends far beyond teaching martial arts techniques. His philosophy centers on cultivating athletes into confident individuals and globally recognized ambassadors for the art. Today, Kombat Taekwondo USA boasts operations in over 110 countries, with more than 1,000 clubs worldwide and 1,400 certified referees.
“Taekwondo is more than just techniques and trophies; it’s a tool for personal transformation,” Sunny explains. His leadership is redefining Taekwondo, ensuring it stands shoulder-to-shoulder with mainstream sports like basketball and tennis, and that its athletes enjoy similar levels of recognition and respect.
Innovating Martial Arts with RESPECT TOKEN
Sunny's forward-thinking approach has culminated in an innovative partnership with RESPECT TOKEN. This initiative is redefining the traditional martial arts landscape by fostering transparency, inclusivity, and meaningful opportunities for athletes internationally.
“RESPECT TOKEN enables the martial arts community to remain true to its foundational values while opening new doors for practitioners and organizations,” Sunny shares. Through this visionary project, he's uniting diverse Taekwondo groups around a shared mission, ensuring inclusivity for athletes across all levels and opening pathways for achievement on the global stage.
This pioneering collaboration is creating a future where athletes can compete at international events like the Olympics or represent their communities around the world, all while benefiting from the enhanced support.
Building the Future of Taekwondo
Beyond the dojang, Sunny's contributions to martial arts extend into strategic growth and vision. Master Park's Black Belt America has been shaping thousands of students with discipline-based guidance. Additionally, as a 5th Dan Kukkiwon Black Belt, a Level 3 Krav Maga instructor, and a 2024 USA National Team member, Sunny's achievements exemplify his commitment to Taekwondo's progression.
Looking ahead, Sunny has set ambitious goals. By the time he turns 50, he plans to launch 50 Kombat Taekwondo locations across the U.S., making martial arts training accessible to more families. Furthermore, Kombat Taekwondo will host major international tournaments, including a flagship event in the U.S. by 2025 as well as other destinations like Colombia, Brazil, and Argentina.
