Apr 06, 2024 at 07:44 am

The hacker involved in the Wormhole $326 million exploit can now claim $50,000 worth of W tokens. Through four wallets, the hacker accumulated 31,000 W tokens during the February 2022 exploit. Despite being the perpetrator of the largest crypto theft, Wormhole neglected to exclude the hacker from an airdrop of 617 million W tokens, allowing them to benefit from the distribution.

Wormhole Exploiter Now Eligible for Substantial Airdrop Claim

April 4, 2024 - The notorious hacker responsible for the devastating $326 million exploit on Wormhole can now lay claim to over $50,000 worth of W tokens. This revelation comes as a result of meticulous research conducted by Degen News, which has identified four wallets associated with the hacker that have accumulated approximately 31,000 W tokens since the exploit in February 2022.

The distribution of a total of 617 million W tokens was earmarked for early adopters of the messaging network on April 3rd. However, an astute observer, influencer Pland, swiftly detected a glaring oversight: the hacker's addresses had not been excluded from the airdrop distribution.

This oversight was later confirmed by a report from security outlet Rekt News, which described the incident as the most significant cryptocurrency theft on record. Jump Crypto, the parent company of Wormhole, swiftly reimbursed the entire loss incurred from the incident in February 2022, when the hacker successfully bypassed Wormhole's smart contract to mint 120,000 Wormhole Ether (whETH).

The revelation that the exploiter is now eligible for a substantial airdrop has raised concerns about the fairness of the distribution process. Critics argue that allowing the perpetrator of such a devastating attack to benefit from the platform's growth is a betrayal of the trust placed in the project by the community.

The development has sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency industry, raising questions about the security measures in place to prevent such exploits and the ethical implications of rewarding those who engage in malicious activities.

As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether Wormhole will take action to rectify this oversight and prevent the exploiter from claiming their hefty airdrop reward. The outcome of this saga will undoubtedly have significant implications for the future of decentralized finance and the role of ethics in the digital asset space.
