Wizards Unleashes Bountiful Rewards with Bounties in 'Magic: The Gathering Commander'

Mar 27, 2024 at 01:30 am

Wizards of the Coast has introduced Bounties, a new gameplay mechanic, to enhance casual play in Magic: The Gathering Commander format. These 12 unique rewards add an optional mini-game that complements the Western theme of the Outlaws of Thunder Junction Commander Precon decks. Each Bounty deck contains a set of six to 12 Bounties, which are flipped face down on the battlefield. Players can collect Bounties on their third turn, meeting specific conditions to earn rewards that increase if an opponent fails to meet the condition. The Bounties reset once all have been claimed, creating an ongoing gameplay element that adds excitement and strategic depth to Commander games.

Wizards Unleashes Bounties in 'Magic: The Gathering Commander'

Wizards of the Coast, the publisher behind the beloved tabletop card game Magic: The Gathering, has introduced an innovative twist to its popular Commander format with the release of the Outlaws of Thunder Junction (OTJ) set: Bounties.

Bounties in MTG Commander: A Spice for Casual Play

The Commander format, which pits multiple players against each other in a sprawling, multiplayer battle, is arguably the most popular iteration of Magic. With Bounties, Wizards introduces a new gameplay mechanic designed to enhance the casual Commander experience.

What are MTG Bounties?

Each MTG Bounty is a unique reward that grants bonus effects or advantages during gameplay. Twelve Bounties are included in the set, with three pre-selected for each of the four preconstructed OTJ Commander decks.

Collecting Bounties: A Test of Timing and Skill

Collecting a Bounty requires fulfilling its specific condition. If the player holding the Bounty fails to do so during their turn, it passes to the next player, potentially increasing its reward value up to a maximum of four levels.

Bounty Deck: The Crucible of Rewards

Wizards recommends playing with a minimum of six Bounties, or ideally all 12, to maximize the variety of rewards. Players construct a separate Bounty deck by shuffling together the selected Bounties and placing them face down on the battlefield.

Bounty Rewards: A Treasured Arsenal

Bounties offer a range of rewards, which can be claimed upon meeting their respective conditions. Initially set at Level 1, these rewards escalate if the condition is not met during a given turn:

  • Level 1: Create a Treasure token
  • Level 2: Create two Treasure tokens
  • Level 3: Create two Treasure tokens or draw a card
  • Level 4: Create two Treasure tokens and draw a card

When a Bounty is claimed, its reward resets to Level 1.

Bounties in Action: A Harmonious Synergy

Bounties seamlessly integrate into the Western-themed ambiance of the OTJ Commander decks, synergizing with their cowboy characters and frontier-inspired mechanics. They add an element of strategic depth, encouraging players to carefully consider their moves and anticipate their opponents' actions.

An Optional Spice for Commander Play

While Bounties enhance casual Commander gameplay, they remain optional and can be easily incorporated or excluded based on player preference. Their modular nature allows for a customizable Commander experience, catering to different playstyles and preferences.
