Telecom Titans Nokia, Ericsson, and Huawei Witness Decline in Dominance as Challengers Gain Traction

Jan 18, 2025 at 09:56 am

Recent market share estimates from TrendForce indicate that challengers are beginning to gain traction, signaling a potential shift in the competitive landscape of the industry.

The telecommunications infrastructure market, once dominated by Nokia, Ericsson, and Huawei, is now shifting as smaller competitors gain market share, according to recent estimates from TrendForce.

Here are the key takeaways from the report:

Nokia, Ericsson, and Huawei, the three major suppliers in the 5G base station market, saw their market shares change as follows:

Ericsson's market share decreased from 28% in Q3 2022 to 24% in Q4 2022.

Nokia's market share also declined slightly, moving from 19% to 18%.

Huawei, on the other hand, saw a slight increase in its market share, which reached 32% in Q4 2022.

Samsung continued to expand its presence in the 5G base station market, increasing its market share from 12% to 14%. This growth was primarily driven by strong 5G deployments in South Korea and North America.

The category labeled "Other," which includes emerging suppliers in the OpenRAN community, saw a significant increase in market share, rising from 10% to 18%. This shift highlights a growing interest in diversifying the supplier ecosystem, which the industry has long desired.

Despite the gradual decline in their market dominance, Nokia, Ericsson, and Huawei are not expected to face an immediate crisis. However, the increasing competition could drive innovation and improve services for consumers. The telecommunications industry has been calling for competition, and the entry of viable alternatives could have a positive impact.

Although Huawei and ZTE faced challenges in international markets, the domestic Chinese market is expected to grow substantially, allowing them to succeed despite setbacks abroad. As the global market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how established players adjust to the rising competition from new entrants.
