Kim's goal was to create a vivid and realistic post-apocalyptic world that would immerse players in the game's unique setting.

Alita: Battle Angel's Influence on Stellar Blade's Visuals and Themes

Among the various inspirations for Stellar Blade, director Kim Hyung-tae specifically named the 2019 film Alita: Battle Angel. Kim explained that the movie's themes and design elements played a significant role in shaping Stellar Blade's artistic vision. "There are quite a few [inspirations]," Kim said. "However, one of the most inspirational, in terms of theme and design, is the sci-fi manga Gunnm by Yukito Kishiro sensei. It was released as an action film in 2019 under the title Alita: Battle Angel. I’d say I took a lot of inspiration from that movie."

Eve's Character Reflects the Themes of Alita: Battle Angel

The influence of Alita: Battle Angel is particularly evident in the design of Stellar Blade's protagonist, Eve. Like Alita, Eve is a female cyborg with a human consciousness. This parallel suggests that the themes of identity, humanity, and the boundaries between the organic and the mechanical, which are central to Alita: Battle Angel, will also be explored in Stellar Blade.

When asked about the design of Stellar Blade's post-apocalyptic world, Kim explained that his team aimed to reinterpret and modernize the elements of classic sci-fi movies. "People have their own vision of what a post-apocalyptic world is like based on what they’ve envisioned in their heads or seen in movies and such," Kim said. "I’m sure many players will appreciate and admire the details and attention that went into making the post-apocalyptic world in Stellar Blade vivid and realistic."
